Command-line message tracking

In my experience, Exchange’s message tracking functionality is pretty darn useful. I don’t use it often, but when I do, it’s a great timesaver. However, the existing Exchange 2003 GUI is a little clunky; sometimes it would be nice to be able to quickly get the status of a message directly from the command line.

As it turns out, you can easily do this in Exchange 2007 using the Exchange Management Shell (EMS), as Bharat points out. If you’re not using Exchange 2007 yet (and, technically, you shouldn’t be, since the beta isn’t supported for production use) you can still use PowerShell (not EMS) to work with the Exchange 2000/2003 message logs, as Glen shows here.
Bonus link: in Bharat’s post he points out that the current Exchange 2007 beta 2 message tracking GUI is a llittle sparse. If you want to roll your own, well, Glen’s got you covered there too– see this post for a script that includes a complete home-grown front-end for message tracking using WinForms from PowerShell.
