Here’s an interesting tidbit: Scalix announced today that they’re going to ship a wireless solution for their messaging product, based on Notify‘s product. Pricing and availability weren’t announced; from a functionality standpoint, Notify has a pretty nice solution in terms of the range of devices and OTA methods they support. I suppose that the components to drive the wireless for Exchange will not be for free either… Notifylink Enterprice Server at least is a good bite lower priced as for instance the RIM/Blackberry Enterprise Server

  2. I’m not sure what you mean, Mark. Microsoft includes two wireless access methods in Exchange 2003 at no extra cost: OMA for cHTML phones, and Exchange ActiveSync for Windows Mobile devices (as well as select devices from Palm, Symbian, Nokia, and Motorola.) There’s some nifty new functionality coming in Exchange 2003 SP2, also free. You certainly can buy third-party products if you need additional functionality, but what comes in the box is good enough for many users.

Another option to the Blackberry Enterprise server is the GoodLink server from Good Technologies. Also a push technology, but also not free. Better support for attachments though.

  4. Don’t forget that there’s no per-server cost for Scalix. While the CALs are a similar price to Exchange’s you don’t pay the additional $4000 per server (or $700 for the crippled version).
