The anti-jet-lag diet

This is pretty neat: biologists at the Argonne National Laboratory have developed a diet (or, more precisely, a mix of foods) that helps prevent jet lag when traveling over long distances, either west-east or east-west. Now they’ve licensed it to antijetlagdiet.com, which will prepare a customized meal plan based on your departure and arrival cities and times. The diet involves timed intake of carbs and protein, avoidance of caffeine and alcohol, and alternating fast and feast days. I think I’ll give it a try next time I have to travel a long distance– it just might work.

  1. I don’t know if it’s considered kosher (for lack of a better word) in your belief system, but you do know about melatonin, right?
(Warning: If upon consultation with spiritual advisors it does turn out to be kosher for you, you probably want to exercise care in its use. It’s not addictive in the traditional physiological sense [*] but my body has adapted to where it takes a slightly larger dose than I’d initially take to work. And it makes your dreams really strange… taking SAM-E at the same time increaced the strange-dream factor. I’d like to say that that’s the reason I stopped taking both, but the truth is, I just forget to take them.)
[*]: Many of the “classically” addictive substances are addictive because they affect in particular the levels in the brain of the neurochemical dopamine. There are other mechanisms of addiction that also work by affecting receptors more directly, but even something that just affects dopamine levels but not causing physical dependence can still be psychologically addicting. Yada yada yada, consult a professional doctor or psychiatrist for a professional opinion, of course…
